Let's Eat!

Our collection
My inspiration for this blog is twofold.  First, when my boyfriend Steve and I moved in together last April we noticed something; we have a lot of cookbooks.  I haven't counted the exact number in a while but it is around 40.  Steve used to keep all of his on the top shelf of our back coat closet.  To me that didn't seem like the best place to keep them so that they would actually get used.  So I amalgamated our collections to one shelf in the kitchen.  Steve and I love to cook and eat.  Steve isn't exactly  a recipe guy and I wasn't sure why he had so many cookbooks until I met his mom.  She is a recipe gal and likes to cook from scratch.  I haven't asked him but I bet that he has never purchased a cookbook and since we've been dating I think his mom has bought me 4.  In her defence I do love cookbooks and I'm sure I have told her so.

Second, growing up my mom always used recipes to cook.  It wasn't very often that she didn't use a recipe to cook a meal.  She was diligent about clipping interesting recipes out of magazines and sorting them into a black accordion file.  Then every week, when she was planning the grocery list, she would pick out recipes put them on one list and then make another list with all the things she needed from the store.  I thought of it as a menu at a restaurant.  Sometimes my mom would ask me to pick off this week's menu what I wanted for dinner.  I loved it!

With a shelf full of cookbooks and love for cooking why not sample from our vast collection and write about it?  I will share you all the recipes make and from which cookbook.  Since the person for whom I most often cook is my beloved Steve then he gets to rank each recipe on a scale of 1 to 10 with what I like to call the "Steve Satisfaction Meter"

There is one more theme that will pop up from time-to-time.  My hate for waste.  As much as I love to make food I hate to waste it.  Over sized portions drive me bananas and wasting food is no different than throwing money in the garbage.  Steve and I strive to eat all of our leftovers.  I will also share when we jazz up a leftover recipe to make it more appealing.  Although we all know that there are plenty of meals that taste better the next day too!

With that I am excited to share my love of cooking and sampling recipes anyone who cares to read!
